Before the squad flew to West Germany in 1974, Pinochet came down the line at the send-off and Caszely kept his hand behind his back, one of the first public refusals the dictator faced. He was top scorer of the 1973 Copa Libertadores as Colo-Colo reached their first final, won five Chilean league titles and three domestic cups, and at that World Cup became the first player shown a red card in the tournament's history. Career record: 49 caps and 29 goals for Chile; club career at Club Social y Deportivo Colo Colo, Levante UD, RCD Espanyol de Barcelona.

On 21 November 1973 he kicked off against nobody at the Estadio Nacional, walked the ball upfield with his team-mates and rolled it into an empty net, the Soviet Union having refused to play there. Colo-Colo reached the 1973 Copa Libertadores final with him running the midfield, the first final for a Chilean club, and he left the game with two Chilean championships, a Copa Chile and 215 league goals, the most in Chilean history until 2020.
