Twelve Champions League nights in 2004-05 brought him four goals, and when PSV met Milan in the semi-finals that spring he became the first American to play at that stage. He remains the only American man to play in four World Cups, 2002 through 2014, and he won four Gold Cups, two Eredivisie titles with PSV, two Scottish league titles with Rangers, and election to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2023.
