On 24 June 2009 he led the United States out against a Spain side unbeaten in 35 matches and walked off in Bloemfontein with a 2-0 win and a clean sheet, one of 64 nights he wore the armband. Gold Cup winner in 2002 and 2007, he finished with 110 caps and 14 goals, won two US Open Cups with Chicago, and was the first player to take MLS Defender of the Year twice.
