In 2012 he was banned for seventeen matches for slapping an opposing coach and announced he was quitting, which followed a full year's suspension in 2001 and another ban for confronting an assistant referee in 2007. He came back, captained the UAE at the 2015 Asian Cup where they finished third, kept goal at three Asian Cups in all, and won league titles at Al Wasl and Al Ahli across more than 300 Pro League appearances.
