In Ljubljana on 13 November 1999 he took one touch inside Ukraine's half, saw Oleksandr Shovkovskiy stranded and lobbed him from fifty metres to put Slovenia 2-1 up in the play-off. That goal opened the way to Euro 2000 and then the 2002 World Cup, the country's first two major tournaments, and he added league and cup titles at Red Star Belgrade before spells at Lille and Tottenham.
