On 3 February 1996, with 80,000 inside FNB Stadium, Tovey took the Africa Cup of Nations trophy from Nelson Mandela after Mark Williams came off the bench to beat Tunisia. That was South Africa's first continental title, and their captain wore the armband 29 times in 52 caps, spent nine years and 362 appearances at Kaizer Chiefs, and holds the record for most appearances in the National Soccer League.
