Tigres retired his number 7 after 61 goals in 188 matches, and in Italy, where he gave Avellino three seasons of Serie A, they called him Tartufòn. He won the 1975 Copa América with Peru at the age of twenty, played the 1982 World Cup, took Mexican league titles in 1977-78 and 1981-82, and was voted the country's Balón de Oro in the second of them.
