In Toulouse on 24 June 1998 the man Paraguay knew as Peque scored just before the hour against Nigeria, and the 3-1 win carried his country into the last sixteen against France. Thirty caps brought eleven goals, and the trophies came late: the 2002 Copa Libertadores and the 2003 Recopa Sudamericana with Olimpia, after the 1999-2000 Copa del Rey and 28 goals in six seasons with Espanyol.
