Paraguay picked him for three World Cup squads across eight years, and in South Africa in 2010 he played three times as the country reached its first quarter-final. He retired in January 2019 with 743 professional matches behind him, four Paraguayan titles at Libertad in 2002, 2003, 2006 and the 2010 Clausura, two more at Cerro Porteño including an unbeaten Clausura 2013, and 80 caps.
