An anonymous caller told him on 28 October 1997 to leave Yugoslavia within twelve hours or be killed, the night before the World Cup play-off first leg against Hungary; he played the next day and Yugoslavia went to France. He had come out of Budućnost by way of Dinamo Zagreb and Sevilla, won the Eredivisie with PSV in 1996-97 under Dick Advocaat, and played through the 1998 World Cup group stage among his 18 caps for FR Yugoslavia.
