At the DW Stadium on 17 March 2013, Callum McManaman's knee-high lunge put the 20-year-old left-back on a stretcher, and because an official had seen the challenge nobody could punish the tackler; the FA changed that rule afterwards. He came back to win Newcastle's 2016-17 Championship, then gave Lens six years and 169 matches, a Ligue 1 runners-up place in 2023 and four Champions League group games, with 18 Mali caps and the 2019 Nations Cup.
