Troyes finished 2019-20 with a centre-half as their top scorer: five Ligue 2 goals from Kouyaté, which put him on the bench of L'Équipe's team of the season. Metz took him to Ligue 1 in August 2020, Montpellier paid around €6 million in January 2023, and Antwerp followed in 2025; three Nations Cups in 2019, 2021 and 2023, 36 Mali caps, the semi-finals of the 2015 Under-20 World Cup, and an international retirement announced in July 2025 at 28.
