He captained the side Brazil accused of playing without joy, and on 17 July 1994 at the Rose Bowl he converted the fourth penalty of the shoot-out before lifting the trophy. That World Cup came with the 1997 Copa América, the 1997 Confederations Cup, a runners-up medal in 1998, the 1988 Olympic silver, and Serie A time at Fiorentina and Pisa across 91 caps.
