El Pato saved Kazimierz Deyna's penalty in Rosario on 14 June 1978, the first of three straight clean sheets that carried Argentina through the second group stage. He was voted the best goalkeeper of the World Cup Argentina won at home, took seven Argentine league titles with River Plate between 1975 and 1981, and in 1977 became the first goalkeeper named Argentine Footballer of the Year.
