Valencia took him into their academy in July 2011, aged ten, and eight years later he left Poland with the Under-20 World Cup Golden Ball, two goals and four assists as Korea reached the final. Two Champions League titles followed with Paris Saint-Germain in 2025 and 2026, making him the second Korean to win it after Park Ji-sung, with three Ligue 1 crowns, two Coupes de France, the 2019 Copa del Rey and Asian Games gold in 2023.
