The Vacuum Cleaner was what Korean crowds called him, and at the 2002 World Cup he shielded the back three through all five matches to the quarter-final before an ankle injury kept him out of the semi-final against Germany. Fourth place there remains South Korea's best finish at a World Cup, and he added the 2008 East Asian Championship as its MVP, the 2014 K League title with Jeonbuk, and 98 caps across three World Cups.
