The Asian Games final of 20 December 1978 was the first meeting between South and North Korea, and he captained the South through 120 goalless minutes to a shared gold. He won 124 caps between 1971 and 1979, finished runner-up at the 1972 Asian Cup, made the Korean FA Best XI eight years running from 1972, was named Korea's player of the year in 1975 and later joined Asia's team of the 20th century.
