At Camp Nou on 21 May 2017 he put Eibar ahead in the seventh minute and volleyed a second just past the hour, the first Japanese player to score against Barcelona in La Liga. He was a runner-up at the 2019 Asian Cup, scored against Senegal and then Belgium at the 2018 World Cup, collected 36 caps and six goals for Japan, and lifted the J2 title with Shimizu S-Pulse in 2024.
