At the 1972 Asian Cup he put three past Iraq in the group stage and then scored again in the final against South Korea, finishing the tournament as its leading marksman. Kalani won the Asian Cup twice, in 1968 and 1972, scored 11 goals in 24 internationals for Iran, and later took his place in the Persepolis hall of fame, one of twelve men given a bust for the club's 1970s.
