On 26 May 1956 in Berlin he opened the scoring against the world champions West Germany with a drive from distance, and the local papers christened him "Boom Boom" for the artillery in his boots. He won two First Division titles with Manchester United, in 1956 and 1957, and had 18 England caps at 21, the age at which he died of his injuries fifteen days after the Munich air crash.
