
Ecuador handed him a debut against Colombia at the 2021 Copa América when he was 19, and by 22 he was the left-sided centre-back in the Bayer Leverkusen team that went through the 2023-24 Bundesliga without losing a match. That season brought the league and the DFB-Pokal, the 2025-26 Premier League followed with Arsenal, and between them came a place in the 2024 Copa América Team of the Tournament and World Cups in 2022 and 2026.
