Five minutes into the first MLS Cup, played at Foxboro on 20 October 1996 in the tail of a nor'easter, El Tanque rose to Mauricio Cienfuegos's cross and headed the Galaxy in front. He scored 26 goals in 74 games for Ecuador, which left him third on their all time scoring list, finished the 1996 MLS season with 21 goals and a place in the Best XI, and played the Copa América of 1993, 1995 and 1997.
