Ecuador handed him a debut off the bench against the Netherlands on 17 May 2014, when he was eighteen, and took him to the World Cup in Brazil a month later. He went to two World Cups, 2014 and 2022, passed 60 caps holding the space in front of the back four, took the Ecuadorian title with Barcelona SC in 2012, and added the Supporters' Shield and the US Open Cup with FC Dallas in 2016.
