Herediano sent him out against Saprissa on 4 January 1997, still fifteen years old, and he was still playing top-flight football seventeen years later. Eight seasons at Saprissa brought five national championships, a CONCACAF Champions Cup and third place at the 2005 Club World Championship in Japan, while a loan spell at Melbourne Victory added the 2008-09 A-League championship and premiership; he won 34 caps.
