In the seventh minute of stoppage time in the Milan derby on 15 April 2017, Zapata met a flick at the far post and volleyed it in off the crossbar for 2-2, the last kick of the game. He won the 2016 Supercoppa Italiana with Milan and the 2023 Superliga with Atlético Nacional, made 58 appearances for Colombia, reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 2014 and finished third at the 2016 Copa América Centenario.
