On 5 September 1993 at the Monumental in Buenos Aires, Valencia scored the fifth goal in Colombia's 5-0 win over Argentina, then flew back to Munich the next day because Bayern had a game. The first Colombian to play in German football, he scored 11 goals for Bayern as they won the 1993-94 Bundesliga, struck against Romania and the United States at the 1994 World Cup, and won the Colombian championship with América de Cali in 1997.
