Chile had not won a World Cup match since 1962 until Ponce lined up beside Gary Medel in Nelspruit on 16 June 2010 and helped shut out Honduras, though two bookings inside 37 minutes against Spain nine days later left him suspended for the Brazil tie. His league titles came with Universidad Católica in 2010, Universidad de Chile in the 2014 Apertura and Vélez Sarsfield in the 2009 Clausura, alongside the 2013 Copa Chile and 42 caps.
