On 21 June 2010 in Port Elizabeth he rose to meet Esteban Paredes' cross and headed Chile past Switzerland, a goal that ended a Swiss World Cup run of 558 minutes without conceding. He was part of the Chile squad that won the 2016 Copa América Centenario, took two Russian league titles and two Russian Cups with CSKA Moscow, and reached the 2007 Champions League final with Liverpool after lifting the Community Shield.
