Sweeney came on in the 41st minute against Hungary in Irapuato on 6 June 1986 and was sent off in the 86th, still the only Canadian dismissed at a World Cup. Canada's 1985 Concacaf Championship, which carried them to Mexico, and the 1990 North American Nations Cup sit on his record alongside the 1984 Olympics, 61 caps, a place in Canada's all-time XI in 2012 and Hall of Fame induction in 2002.
