Gerente, the manager, was the nickname Brazilian reporters gave the Santos captain, and on 18 June 1962 in Santiago he headed Brazil ahead of Czechoslovakia in the World Cup final with Pelé sidelined by injury. He won the World Cup twice, in 1958 and 1962, then took Santos to back-to-back Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cups in 1962 and 1963, adding five Taça Brasil titles and nine São Paulo state championships.
