
When Australia played its first World Cup match in Hamburg on 14 June 1974, he started in midfield wearing number nine, and he spent the next three decades insisting it would not be the last. He won 42 caps and captained the side, took three New South Wales grand finals with St George Budapest, an MBE in 1974 and FIFA's Centennial Order of Merit in 2004, and gave his name to the medal the A-League's best player collects.
