In Gijón on 16 June 1982 he took the job nobody wanted, following Horst Hrubesch everywhere and giving the target man nothing in the air, and Algeria beat the reigning European champions West Germany 2-1 on their World Cup debut. He won 30 caps and scored twice between 1980 and 1986, played at two World Cups, and took third place at the 1984 Cup of Nations after Algeria beat Egypt 3-1 in Abidjan. Career record: 30 caps and 2 goals for Algeria; club career at Valenciennes, FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Lille OSC.
