The 1958 World Cup ended with him named in the tournament's all-star eleven, and a year later his goal in Budapest carried the Soviet Union past Hungary. The Soviet Union won the first European Championship in 1960 with him in midfield, and at Dynamo Kyiv he took the 1961 league title, the first ever won outside Moscow, after being named Eastern European Footballer of the Season.
