In Frankfurt on 18 June 1988 he made it 2-1 against England after twenty-eight minutes, the middle goal of a 3-1 win on the Soviet Union's way to the final. Olympic gold in Seoul that same year followed a European Championship final, and he added the Cup Winners' Cup with Dynamo Kyiv, Serie A with Sampdoria, five straight Scottish titles at Rangers, and Soviet Footballer of the Year in 1988. Career record: 41 caps and 9 goals for Ukraine; club career at FC Dynamo Kyiv, U.C. Sampdoria, Rangers; honours include 4× Hall of Fame.

The 1958 World Cup ended with him named in the tournament's all-star eleven, and a year later his goal in Budapest carried the Soviet Union past Hungary. The Soviet Union won the first European Championship in 1960 with him in midfield, and at Dynamo Kyiv he took the 1961 league title, the first ever won outside Moscow, after being named Eastern European Footballer of the Season. Career record: 23 caps and 2 goals for Ukraine; club career at FC Zenit Saint Petersburg, FC Dynamo Kyiv; honours include Hall of Fame.
