In Frankfurt on 18 June 1988 he made it 2-1 against England after twenty-eight minutes, the middle goal of a 3-1 win on the Soviet Union's way to the final. Olympic gold in Seoul that same year followed a European Championship final, and he added the Cup Winners' Cup with Dynamo Kyiv, Serie A with Sampdoria, five straight Scottish titles at Rangers, and Soviet Footballer of the Year in 1988.
