Zamalek supporters still count him second on the club's all-time scoring list, a forward who led the Egyptian league in goals in 1976-77 and again in 1979-80. Bronze and the best midfielder award at the 1974 Cup of Nations were his high points as a player, with 14 goals in 52 caps, and from the touchline he then won the tournament three times running, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, the only coach to do it. Career record: 52 caps and 14 goals for Egypt; club career at Zamalek SC, Kazma Sporting Club.

Al Ahly fans named the front three of Barakat, Aboutrika and Emad Moteab the Bermuda Triangle, and in 2005 he finished the CAF Champions League as its joint top scorer with seven goals. That season brought him the BBC African Footballer of the Year award and CAF's prize for the best player based in Africa; he won four CAF Champions Leagues and seven league titles with Al Ahly, and the 2006 Cup of Nations with Egypt.
