On 19 November 1989 in Port of Spain, half an hour into a qualifier the United States had to win, he took Bruce Murray's bouncing pass, cut inside a defender and looped a left-footed shot over Michael Maurice from outside the box. That one goal carried the Americans to the 1990 World Cup after a 40-year absence; he then played at Italia 90 and USA 94, won the 1991 Gold Cup and finished with 110 caps.
