From 35 yards at the Baseball Ground on 12 December 1990 he beat Peter Shilton, and the strike that put Derby County out of the League Cup was voted England's goal of the season. Wednesday won that cup at Wembley in April 1991, with Harkes the first American in a major final there, and he later scored in the 1993 League Cup final, took MLS Cup in 1996 and 1997 with D.C.
