At 40 years and two months old, Boumnijel was the oldest player at the 2006 World Cup, still Tunisia's first choice nearly 15 years after his debut against Côte d'Ivoire in November 1991. He won the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in goal, saving Peter Odemwingie's penalty in the semi-final shootout against Nigeria, and played at three World Cups in 1998, 2002 and 2006 across 51 caps.
