On 29 July 2007 in Jakarta he met Hawar Mulla Mohammed's corner and headed the goal that beat Saudi Arabia and made Iraq champions of Asia while their country was at war. He took the 2007 Asian Cup's MVP and Golden Boot awards, captained Iraq for a decade, won three Qatar Stars League top-scorer titles as a foreign player, and finished 29th in that year's Ballon d'Or.
