At La Bombonera on 31 August 1969, Cachito scored both Peru goals in the 2-2 draw that took his country to Mexico 1970 and knocked Argentina out. He won the 1975 Copa América with Peru, four league titles between Universitario and Sporting Cristal, took the Copa Libertadores scoring crown in 1972 and again in 1975, and still holds the Peruvian record of 26 goals in that competition.
