Berlin, 8 August 1936: he kept goal as Peru came from two down to beat Austria 4-2 in extra time, a result annulled days later, and Peru left the Games rather than replay it. El Mago won the 1939 South American Championship on home soil in Lima, took Bolivarian Games gold in 1938, had already played at the 1930 World Cup, and collected a run of Peruvian titles behind the Alianza Lima side known as the Rodillo Negro.
