He captained the under-23s at London 2012 and scored the second goal in the bronze medal win over Japan, the first Olympic football medal Korea had ever won. He was top scorer at the 2011 Asian Cup with five goals as Korea took third, a runner-up in 2015, captain at the 2014 World Cup, and a Bundesliga regular for more than 200 games with Wolfsburg, Augsburg and Mainz, scoring Augsburg's first hat-trick in the top flight.
