Iraq's home leg against Syria on 29 November 1985 kicked off in Taif, Saudi Arabia, because the war meant no qualifier could be staged on Iraqi soil, and Allawi was on the scoresheet in the 3-1 win that sent his country to its only World Cup. Mexico 1986 followed, along with Asian Games gold in 1982, an Olympic tournament in Los Angeles, and 81 caps across nine years. Career record: 81 caps and 2 goals for Iraq; club career at Baghdad, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Rasheed SC.
