Seville, 8 July 1982, deep into extra time: Giresse struck first time from 18 yards, in off Schumacher's post, and France led West Germany 3-1 in a semi-final they would lose on penalties. Two years later he formed a quarter of the carré magique that won France the 1984 European Championship, having finished runner-up for the 1982 Ballon d'Or; at Bordeaux came two league titles and the 1986 Coupe de France. Career record: 47 caps and 6 goals for France; club career at FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Olympique de Marseille.
