Still running after 120 minutes at Wembley in 1966, socks round his ankles, he chased down the right flank and pulled back the cross Geoff Hurst thundered against the bar for England's most argued-over goal. The World Cup came at 21, the youngest man in that side and the choice of several teammates as the final's outstanding player, followed by the First Division with Everton in 1970.
