Five minutes into Colombia's first World Cup match in sixteen years, on 14 June 2014, he arrived late from left-back and scuffed a shot that deflected off Kostas Manolas and past Orestis Karnezis. Colombia reached the quarter-finals from there, their best World Cup, and across 68 caps he added a Colombian title with América de Cali in 2008, the Copa do Nordeste with Bahia in 2017, and a Serie A team of the year place at Udinese in 2010-11.
