At eighteen he left for PEC Zwolle in 1987, among the first Chinese footballers to turn professional in Europe, and the following December he scored twice against Syria as China won 3-0 in Qatar. He finished with 42 caps and eight goals for China, a place in the team of the tournament at the 1988 Asian Cup, bronze in 1992 and silver at the 1994 Asian Games. Career record: 120 caps and 11 goals for China; club career at Guangdong Hongyuan, Guangzhou Matsunichi, Guangzhou City.
