Peito de Aço, steel chest, Brazil called him, and he played like it, bullying centre-halves in the air and on the turn; in the 1958 final he scored twice against Sweden. World champion in 1958 and 1962, he became the first man to score in two World Cup finals, shared the golden boot in Chile, and won two Copas del Rey with Atlético Madrid. Career record: 20 caps and 15 goals for Brazil; club career at Atlético Madrid, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, San Diego Toros.
