In the 2017 Asian Champions League semi-final against Persepolis he completed a perfect hat-trick in Abu Dhabi, a header and one goal with each foot, with Al Hilal a man down from early in the second half. That season carried him to Asian Footballer of the Year, the first Syrian to take it, alongside the competition's top-scorer award with ten goals and three Saudi league titles in Riyadh.
